Orange lipsticks can be intimidating to get into. Orange isn’t a traditional lipstick color but it’s been very “in” in the last few years. It’s a great bold color that can replace red as a statement color but it can also be soft and natural. Orange is a really fun color to wear but it does take some getting used to and there is definitely some trial-and-error involved in finding the perfect color. I typically think of my lipstick stash as 90% pink with a few berries, a handful of nudes, and a couple oranges thrown in but I was surprised by just how many orange lipsticks I pulled out when I wrote this post. Turns out, I own a lot of oranges! Today I’m swatching several different shades, just in time for Halloween.
My orange lipsticks encompass a huge range of colors, from bright “fashion girl orange” to soft coral. I wear a lot of different brands and finishes so I tried to narrow it down to a few to talk about today. Some of my favorite oranges are: Revlon Moon Drops in Orange Flip, Ciate Liquid Velvet Matte Lip Slick in Risque, Yves Saint Laurent Rouge Volupte Shine in Orange Impertinent, Tarte LipSurgence Lip Tint in Joy, Stila Stay All Day Vinyl Lip Gloss in Melon Vinyl, and Urban Decay Revolution Lipstick in Streak.
While orange seems like it would always be super bold, a lot of the orange lipsticks I own are slightly sheer or more pink. As much as I love wearing bright colors, sometimes orange can be a bit much so it’s nice to be able to wear a softer version of the color.
Revlon’s Orange Flip was the first orange I bought. I call this my “fashion blogger orange” because it seemed like every blogger was wearing it a few years ago. This is a very bold, opaque color that is the perfect substitute for a red lip. I love this bright shade but it’s very warm and it can be hard to pull off. I like to wear it with creams and tans and it looks really nice with gold eyeshadow. I also like to play up the orange shade with bright blue eyeliner.
Ciate’s Liquid Velvet in Risque is the most recent orange I’ve added to my collection. I received it in my Give Me More Lip set and I originally thought I would swap it with someone else. Then I saw it in person and I knew it would stay. This is a very bright, almost neon orange. It’s redder and less warm than Orange Flip. The liquid formula has a matte but moisturizing finish and it is long-wearing.
YSL’s Orange Impertinent is what I like to call my “everyday orange.” It’s a great orange color that isn’t as bright and the slightly sheer formula makes it much more wearable. This is the lipstick I wear when I want an orange lip but don’t want the maintenance that goes along with it.
Tarte’s LipSurgence Lip Tint in Joy is more of a peachy-orange shade. It is also a bit sheer but it’s even less dramatic than Orange Impertinent. This is more of a natural, warm lip shade and the crayon applicator makes it super easy to apply on the go. Joy feels a lot lighter than a normal lipstick so it’s comfortable to wear but it doesn’t last very long and it does contain peppermint which can irritate some people’s lips.
Stila’s Stay All Day Vinyl Lip Gloss in Melon Vinyl is the pinkiest orange I own. It’s more of a brightened coral shade than a straight orange. I love the intense color of this and although it’s a gloss it applies very opaque like a liquid lipstick. It’s pretty thick and just slightly tacky and it really does last a long time. This can be heavy on the lips and it never really sets so it transfers a lot but the vibrant shade is worth it.
Finally I have Urban Decay’s Revolution Lipstick in Streak. I had a little pot of this but I received the full-sized lipstick in the Give Me More Lip set. This is a really pretty coral shade that is perfect when I want a softer look. The formula feels really nice on and it’s pretty pigmented. It’s shiny and easy to apply and although it’s a light, moisturizing lipstick, it still lasts for most of the day.
As it turns out, I love orange lipsticks! I’m not really partial to a certain shade or finish and I like all the colors I own for different reasons. Orange Flip will always be the first shade I bought and while it’s not the most wearable, it is fun to break out every now and then. Risque is great when I want a super bold lip and Orange Impertinent is better as an everyday shade. Joy is great when I want an understated orange with an easy application. Melon Vinyl is perfect for a glossy, vibrant, pinky-orange lip and Streak is a gorgeous coral with a great formula that is nice for softer looks. Although orange may seem a little intense it is actually very wearable, and there is such a huge range of finishes and colors to choose from!
