Julep July 2014 Maven Box

Julep July 2014 Maven BoxI finally received my Julep July 2014 Maven Box! For those that don’t know, Julep Maven is a monthly subscription box from Julep where you receive new products at a package price. There are different levels of boxes, but for the most part every month you receive a box with two polishes and a beauty product, two beauty products, or three polishes, depending on your Maven profile. What I like about Julep is you get to choose what box you get each month. Hate the products in your profile box that month? Switch to another box! They also recently unveiled two new programs called My Maven and Maven Luxe, where you can pick and choose which products/polishes you get (you aren’t limited to what is in the default boxes).

With My Maven you get three items of your choosing and with Maven Luxe you get more (but you pay more). You can also “add on” products to your box at a heavily discounted price, or even upgrade to the full collection if you want. Originally you could skip months whenever you wanted, but now you “earn” a skip every six months. By becoming a Maven, you also get a 20% discount on all products and free shipping on everything (which is awesome because they put out a lot of great promo codes). They ship through DHL, which takes a while, but I’d rather have free shipping on everything and wait then pay for faster shipping. When you take a box you get access to their Secret Store, which opens at the beginning of the next month for a few days and has special sales. You also earn Jules for every box you take, which you can use to pay for add-ons or boxes.

July was my first time trying My Maven, where you can select what products you get without being limited to what’s in the default boxes. I really like this new program because I am constantly torn between which box to get. July’s theme was “The Poolside Collection” and it included lots of bright crème polishes. This time I selected their new Oxygen Smoothing Base Coat, Vicki (from the Classic with a Twist box) and Lissa (Bombshell).

Julep July 2014 Maven BoxThe Oxygen Smoothing Base Coat is regularly $18, or $14.40 for Mavens (that’s the discount I was talking about). It is a hydrating, smoothing base coat that uses what Julep calls “Oxygen Technology” to let your nails breathe so they stay healthy (this is also in all of their polishes).

Julep July 2014 Maven BoxTwo coats each, no top coat.

Vicki ($14/11.20 Maven) is described as a “Pink Flamingo crème.” This polish was a little disappointing to me. It was thick (Julep polishes are usually on the thicker side but this was more than normal) and a little streaky. I added polish thinner before doing a second coat and that seemed to help some, but it still wasn’t as good as I was hoping. I was expecting a medium warm pink, but Vicki is all over the place. In some lighting, like above, it looks like a pinky-coral, but for me it ranges from pastel orange to coral to hot pink. Below is a picture taken in sunlight and you can see how different it looks compared to the other pictures.

Julep July 2014 Maven BoxLissa ($14/11.20 Maven) is described as a “tumbled turqoise crème.” This description is pretty accurate. It is a nice teal/turquoise crème, almost a one-coater. The color is consistent in all lighting, unlike Vicki. This color is probably pretty dupeable, but I don’t have anything like it. Julep polishes are 5-free.

Even though I’m a little disappointed with Vicki, I’m still happy with my Julep July 2014 Maven Box. I really like being able to pick exactly what I get with the My Maven program, and overall I really like Julep’s products.

I received two promo codes in my box:

Use PERK1020 for $10 off a $20 purchase (through 7/31, not valid on Mystery Boxes, Secret Store items, Jule Boxes and gift cards).

Use GOBARE for 30% off Julep’s new Bare Body Polish or Bare Body Milk, through 7/31.

Sign up for Julep Maven using my referral code here and use the promo code SHIPSHAPE to get your first box (3 polishes and 2 beauty products) for FREE!

Julep Maven is a subscription service. By signing up you agree to their terms of service. You can call and cancel at any time. Their window for choosing products is the 20th-24th of each month, and then you are billed on the 27th and boxes start shipping. You can earn a skip every six months. My Maven is $24.99 per month or $59.97 if you pay for three months upfront. Maven Luxe is $39.99 per month or $104.97 if you pay for three months upfront.
