I have mixed feelings about subscription boxes. I love the idea of trying new products and it’s so fun to get a surprise package in the mail every month but I feel like with most boxes I end up wishing I had just spent the money on something I actually wanted instead. Play! by Sephora is a little different though. When it was first announced I added myself to the waitlist but was never able to get off of it until now. I buy most of my makeup from Sephora and I love their deluxe samples and promo codes so I figured I’d be pretty happy with whatever I got in my box. For $10 a month (plus a little tax if you live in a state with a Sephora store), you get five deluxe samples and a fragrance sample, all in a cute little makeup bag. And the $10 gives you Beauty Insider points and counts towards your dollars spent each year, meaning it’s easier to become a VIB or VIB Rouge. The Play! by Sephora April box was my first order, and I was so excited to see what was inside.
There are a few different box variations each month and you can customize your profile so you’re more likely to end up with a box you like. I received box 591, which, lucky for me, was my favorite variation. My box contained the Ole Henriksen Truth Serum, the Dr. Dennis Gross Ferulic + Retinol Wrinkle Recovery Peel, the Smashbox Photo Finish Primer, the Make Up For Ever Aqua XL Eye Pencil, the Sephora Collection Waterproof Eye Makeup Remover, and a sample of Juliette Has A Gun Not A Perfume. My Play! by Sephora April box also contained a super fun bag to hold everything, a foldout flyer with details on all the products, and an in-store coupon for an extra 50 Beauty Insider points with any purchase through the end of this month.
I’ve used the Ole Henriksen Truth Serum Vitamin C Anti-Aging Collagen Booster before and I really like it. This serum contains vitamin C to brighten and firm skin and it has anti-aging properties. I use it after washing my face and before my moisturizer and it makes me skin feel hydrated and it does look brighter. Plus, this serum smells like oranges! This is easily my favorite item from my box and the deluxe sample is a generous size.
I was also excited to see the Dr. Dennis Gross Ferulic + Retinol Wrinkle Recovery Peel. I’ve used peels from Dr. Dennis Gross before and they are great for instant exfoliation and make a big difference in how my skin looks. This peel uses retinol and ferulic acid to exfoliate skin, restore firmness, and reveal radiance. My box contained two of the peels which will give me an idea of how well I like it.
I also received a couple of makeup items in my box. The Smashbox Iconic Photo Finish Foundation Primer is a classic for a reason. This was the first foundation primer that I ever used and while I’ve moved on to others I like better, I will use this sample. This primer makes skin smooth and helps makeup last throughout the day. It’s a bit of a boring sample for my first box but it’s not the worst sample I could have gotten.
The Make Up For Ever Aqua XL Eye Pencil is a waterproof eyeliner that glides on smoothly and doesn’t smudge or run throughout the day. Make Up For Ever makes a lot of fun, bright eyeliners but the one in the box is black. I almost never wear black eyeliner so this is a bit of a dud for me, in fact, I’m pretty sure I’ve given away a sample of this eyeliner once or twice already.
My Play! by Sephora April box included a Sephora Collection Waterproof Eye Makeup Remover. I’ve always been pretty happy with the Sephora Collection products I’ve tried so I don’t mind that this was part of the box over a more expensive brand. Eye makeup remover can be a bit of a hit or miss for me, sometimes they really irritate my eyes, but this is a nice travel size that will be handy for upcoming trips.
My fragrance sample was the Juliette Has A Gun fragrance in Not a Perfume. This is an “anti-perfume” with a single fresh, clean note: Cetalox. I usually wear sweet, gourmand fragrances but I don’t mind this perfume. It’s light and crisp and it doesn’t feel too perfume-y.
I was pretty happy with my Play! by Sephora April box, even if a lot of the items were kind of boring. This was a good staple box to get with a well-rounded selection of skincare, makeup, and fragrance samples. Box 591 had the highest value too, with $41.75 worth of products for only $10. I am excited about the Ole Henriksen Truth Serum and the Dr. Dennis Gross Ferulic + Retinol Wrinkle Recovery Peel. The Smashbox Photo Finish Primer and the Sephora Collection Waterproof Eye Makeup Remover aren’t very exciting but I will use them. I was not happy to receive another black eyeliner and I hope my next box has a little more color in it!
