Slutty Brownies

slutty_brownies9Growing up, I was always torn between double fudge brownie and cookie dough ice cream. I loved both equally, how was I ever supposed to choose which one I wanted? The day I discovered Half Baked ice cream from Ben and Jerry’s literally changed my life. It was like the storm clouds parted and sunshine started streaming in. Okay, that might be a bit of an exaggeration but finding an ice cream that combined my two favorites into one was definitely life-changing. I had that same reaction when I discovered slutty brownies. A layer of cookie dough topped with a layer of brownie and an Oreo sandwiched in between? Sure, the name is kind of dumb (I think The Most Amazing Brownies You’ll Ever Eat sounds a little better) but I couldn’t wait to try them.

Chocolate Chip Cookies from Milk Bar Life

milk_bar_chocolate_chip_cookies5I’ve heard a lot about Momofuku Milk Bar over the years but I’ve never been able to visit. Their desserts are well-known (especially Karlie’s Kookies and Crack Pie) and when I saw that Momofuku Milk Bar founder Christina Tosi was releasing a new cookbook, Milk Bar Life, I had to try it. If I can’t visit the Milk Bar in person, at least I can make some of the recipes at home. Unlike Tosi’s first cookbook, Momofuku Milk Bar, Milk Bar Life does not focus extensively on desserts. Instead, Tosi includes more savory foods and focuses on simple and nostalgic recipes featuring supermarket ingredients.

Cadbury Creme Egg Brownies

cadbury_creme_egg_brownies5When we were younger, our Easter baskets consisted of a new outfit, Reese’s Peanut Butter Eggs, Whopper Robin Eggs, and some Peeps to share. I was never a big fan of Whoppers or Peeps so I usually convinced Stacie to trade me some of her Reese’s for my Robin Eggs. It was one of the only times our trading worked out in her favor (I was happy to give up all of my candy for only a couple Reese’s). Eventually my mom caught on and now our baskets contain a card and a box of Cadbury Creme Eggs.

Valentine’s Day Cake Pops

Valentine's Day Cake PopsA few weeks ago, I came across a bunch of cute baking supplies. I’m a big baker, so I love anything that makes my desserts look cute. Plus, they were such great bright colors for spring. What really caught my eye though was a package of lollipop sticks with little hearts on them. I’ve read Bakerella for years and while I’ve made a few of her dessert recipes, I’ve never made cake pops before. As soon as I saw these lollipop sticks, I knew I wanted to make some Valentine’s Day cake pops.

Homemade Decadence by Joy Wilson

Homemade Decadence by Joy WilsonHomemade Decadence is a new cookbook by Joy Wilson, otherwise known as Joy the Baker. The cover claims this is a cookbook full of, “irresistibly sweet, salty, gooey, sticky, fluffy, creamy, crunchy treats.” I would say that’s exactly what it is, and Homemade Decadence is the perfect title for this collection. These are definitely over-the-top and delicious recipes. I’m a huge fan of everything-but-the-kitchen-sink, more-is-more desserts, so this book is perfect for me. The recipes are divided into five categories, and each is better than the last: Brunch (Pear, Dark Chocolate, and Ginger Scones, Blueberry Pancake Muffins with Maple Glaze, Roasted Strawberry and Balsamic Grits), Cookies, Brownies, and Bars (Dark Chocolate, Pistachio, and Smoked Sea Salt Cookies, Peach, Brie, and Dark Chocolate S’mores, Bourbon-Chocolate Pecan Pie Bars), Pies, Crumbles, and Cobblers (Apple Pie with Cheddar-Bacon Crust, Lemon-Buttermilk Pie with Maple-Cranberry Sauce, Brown Sugar-Rosemary Cheesecake with Bourbon-Burnt Caramel Sauce), Layer Cakes, Cupcakes, and Skillet Cakes (Chocolate-Peanut Butter Pretzel Layer Cake, Almond Angel Food Cake with Vanilla-Scented Citrus, Olive Oil Cornmeal Cake), and Ice Cream Social (Salted Dark Chocolate and Orange Ice Cream, Blueberry-Goat Cheese Ice Cream, Mint-Lemonade Sorbet). The recipes are easy to follow and the book is full of beautiful, mouth-watering pictures. This is a fun, decadent cookbook.

Chocolate Chip Surprise Cookies

Chocolate Chip Surprise Cookies ingredientsHmmm… what could I be baking today? I saw this recipe on Bakerella a while ago and I immediately knew I wanted to make it. Chocolate chip cookies? Stuffed with Oreos? I like chocolate chip cookies. And Oreos. These Chocolate Chip Surprise Cookies seemed right up my alley. {Pro-tip: The recipe called for Double-Stuf Oreos, but I only buy the Reduced Fat ones. Am I concerned with the fat content in my overly-processed, not-very-good-for-you cookies? Haha. I actually like to put peanut butter on my Oreos and the regular ones crumble too easily. For some reason, the Reduced Fat Oreos hold up better. Plus, I don’t like all of the filling in Double Stuf Oreos- I prefer to taste more of the cookie. You can use whatever flavor you want.}
