Where’s Karl?: A Fashion-Forward Parody by Stacey Caldwell and Ajiri A. Aki is a fun take on Where’s Waldo? books. Instead of searching for Waldo, our job is to find Karl Lagerfeld, wherever he may be. Our guide is (imaginary) fashion blogger Florence de la Sabine (you can call her Fleur). Fleur is determined to get an interview with Karl but she must find him first. Armed with an itinerary provided by Karl’s bodyguard, Fleur leads us across the globe in an attempt to track down the elusive Karl. Will we find him in Milan at a party for Fendi, at a pop-up shop in Hong Kong, or skiing in St. Moritz?
Where’s Karl? is a lot more entertaining than I was expecting. It’s an interesting way to revisit the fun I had reading Where’s Waldo? books growing up and the fashion aspect is very cool. There are so many different things to find in this book. The goal is to find Karl but it’s also fun to see how many celebrities and fashion people you can also spot. There’s Anna Wintour and Grace Coddington next to Iris Apfel. Over in the corner are Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen and if you look over here you’ll spot Keira Knightley and Pharrell Williams. Can you find Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt with all of their kids? Will you be able to spot Nicole Richie doing yoga by the pool at Chateau Marmont? It’s a lot of fun trying to figure out who’s who and Caldwell and Aki even include a list at the back of the book with more things to search for. I think my favorite setting was the Met Gala because I could spot people by outfits they’ve worn in previous years. I was surprised by how much I liked Where’s Karl?: A Fashion Forward Parody. It was super entertaining and this would make a great coffee table book. It’s a perfect conversation starter.
