On Wednesday night, Sephora held a VIB Rouge Holiday Soiree to kick off the holiday season and the start of their VIB 20% off sale. I’ve been to a couple of VIB Rouge events in the past (including their VIB Rouge Reception in August), and while I haven’t been super impressed, they have been kind of fun. Plus, there is a Sephora right across the street from where I live, so it’s pretty convenient. The previous events have been on Sunday mornings but this one was in the evening, which I preferred. It was much more laid back and although I didn’t have much time to shop (I went after work and only made it for the last half hour), I liked it a lot better.
My Sephora store is pretty organized when it comes to these events- I was greeted at the door and given a Sephora tote bag and a Shashi bracelet before I even walked in, and they handed me a card detailing events at the Beauty Studio and what brand had reps in the store during the VIB Rouge Holiday Soiree. There were plenty of cast members available to help and I was actually able to talk to some of the brand reps this time (the Derma Doctor Skincare rep was especially helpful, I’ve never used their products but she gave me some great suggestions for Christmas gifts and was fun to talk to). They also had a table with sparkling cider, water, mini cupcakes (the chocolate salted caramels ones were delicious), and Godiva chocolates. Much better than the coffee and supermarket pastries at the morning events. I only picked up a couple of small things this trip and I was very happy to see they had their holiday gift boxes again. I used quite a few for wrapping gifts last year and they made it so easy.
The Sephora totes are cute but not the sturdiest and I was really disappointed by the Shashi bracelet. The brand actually makes some really cute friendship bracelets but this one is pretty cheap. It’s basically seed beads on embroidery thread, something I could easily make myself for only a few cents. Thanks Sephora, but you shouldn’t have. Really. I much preferred the sample bag I got at the last event. Still, I will probably wear the bracelet, but it’s not what I was expecting.
One of the items I was excited to pick up at the VIB Rouge Holiday Soiree was Sephora’s Instant Nail Polish Remover for Glitter. I love to paint my nails but hate taking the polish off. Someone recommended Sephora’s Instant Nail Polish Remover to me and I was instantly hooked. It’s basically a bottle of remover that has a piece of foam inside. The foam has a hole in the middle. You stick your finger in the hole and rub it against the foam and voila, your polish is removed in an instant. This glitter version is new and supposed to be better. It has the same setup but with a bigger hole in the middle and another smaller, rougher, scratchier piece of foam in the hole. Even though it’s supposed to be better, I found it harder to use than the regular remover. The inner piece of foam moves around a lot. It would be better if the whole thing was the rougher foam instead of just the tiny piece. Stick to this version instead.
The VIB Rouge Holiday Soiree was the kickoff for Sephora’s VIB and VIB Rouge 20% off sale that goes through Monday, November 10th, in store and online. To get the discount online, enter the promo code GIFTVIB if you’re a VIB or GIFTROUGE if you’re a VIB Rouge.
Another great promo Sephora has going on right now is their holiday sets. You choose from three different sets that each include eight samples and a makeup bag. They do these every year but unfortunately this year the promo codes can only be used one time. (However, there are different codes for BI and VIB/VIB Rouge, so if you’re a VIB, you can use each promo once for a total of two bags.) I went with Bag 3- Flawless Refresh. My bag contained samples of Prada Candy Florale and Marc Jacobs Daisy, and deluxe samples of Bliss Body Butter, tarte LipSurgence Lip Gloss in Exposed, Glamglow Thirstymud, Clarins Super Restorative Total Eye Concentrate, Clinique Almost Lipstick in Black Honey, and First Aid Beauty Face Cleanser. I went with this bag because I wanted to try Thirstymud and Black Honey.
The two lip colors in this set are both pretty neutral. Exposed is a nude rose color and Black Honey is a very sheer dark berry shade.
I really like tarte’s products, but I hate their lip glosses. They are thick and sticky, everything I don’t want in a gloss. Exposed doesn’t have much color to it. I like tarte’s blush in this shade, but the lip gloss isn’t anything special.
After hearing so many great things about Black Honey over the years, I was anxious to try it. I have to say, I don’t understand the hype. Clinique is one of those brands that constantly lets me down. Black Honey feels really nice on the lips, but there is almost no color. It’s a little too brown and not berry enough for me and it went on patchy. Instead of getting a barely-there berry color, I ended up looking like I had bruised lips.
Both lip colors were a disappointment to me, but I’m still excited about the other products in my bag, and I can’t wait to get another one (I’m thinking bag 1 next time).
If you’re a Beauty Insider, you can pick your own sample set with any $25 online purchase, just use the promo code SEASONSET. If you’re VIB or VIB Rouge, you can use SEASONSET and VIBSEASON.
